The Mental Health Foundation has commissioned the chart-topping pianist-composer RIOPY – saved by music after a traumatic and abusive childhood – to write a new piano piece for Mental Health Awareness Week (15-21 May) to help people to soothe anxiety. The piece, called Meditation 111, is intended to be so simple that anyone can learn to play it, regardless of musical ability.

RIOPY and the Foundation invite the public to learn the piece for Mental Health Awareness Week with the help of lessons and tips from RIOPY himself.

MEDITATION TUTORIAL

"It is an honour to be commissioned by the Mental Health Foundation to create a piano piece for Mental Health Awareness Week to help people to soothe anxiety.

Meditation 111 is intended to be accessible, easy for anyone to learn regardless of their musical ability, and can be played with just three fingers. It is meant to inspire a meditative state, and help the player find a sense of calm.

During Mental Health Awareness Week, in partnership with Mental Health Foundation I would like to invite you to join in via social media, by sharing videos playing Meditation 111 on pianos at home, or public pianos in schools, churches, malls and train stations. You will be able to learn to play the composition with the help of tutorial videos, lessons and tips from me. I’d also like to see you reinterpret and improvise over the work on any instrument and share your creations on social media, using the hashtags #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek and #ToHelpMyAnxiety.

Music has made an incredibly positive impact on my mental health throughout my life, and I hope that by sharing this piece I can help others find the sense of peace piano brings me."
